“I originally started painting Black & White Cards (with a little red) in 1980 when I was young and poor. The cost of full color printing was much too expensive for my budget. I found that I could afford to paint a picture in grays and have it printed but I felt it lacked something, so I drew a cardinal and hand colored it. Each year I would send out a card to my customers and friends. Then the next year, I would try to sell them at art shows. Soon, I had many different cards to sell. By the way, now I’m old and still poor.” Dan Merrell
